What does it mean to be healthy?

The word health relates to a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not only the lack of disease or illness (WHO). This definition is, however, translated to mean different things to different people. It could mean something completely different from a busy mum and then one thing to a student.

Being healthy is not always about following a strict diet or exercise regimen. It is about finding out what works best for you, your lifestyle and making choices that can help energize you.

It means providing your body with the right nutrients and making choices that lead you to becoming stronger, fitter and more confident. Being healthy is a decision, one that anyone can take irrespective of their circumstances or reason for desiring to be healthy.

Ever noticed how healthy people seem to glow from within? They seem to be in shape, looking happy and beaming with positive energy. Don’t we all want to be like so?

Things don’t just happen for healthy people. Their lifestyle takes work, diligence, and above all, consistency.

Physical Health

The state of your physical body and how well it is working. It is influenced by levels of physical activity, adequate nutrition, rest and your environment.

Mental Health

The psychological state of someone who is working at a satisfying level of emotional and behavioral change.


Emotional Health

This refers to your feelings which encompasses everything about you. It governs your decisions, your mood, and who you are.

Social Health

Social health is how you get along with other people, which involves your ability to form satisfying interpersonal relationships with others.

How to stay Healthy

Get active

o Ordinary exercise is one of the most significant strides toward a sound body and brain, with incalculable advantages, for example, diminished danger of Alzheimer’s, type 2-diabetes, stress and cancer.

o Make time for exercise every day. It could be a stroll around the square, putting forth an attempt to walk more places consistently, or doing a yoga session, the action itself isn’t as significant as the way that you’re moving your body each day.

Stay Hydrated

o `The need for water in keeping your body healthy can never be overstated. Drinking more water can help with your overall health and minimise fatigue, hunger pangs, and other symptoms of dehydration.

o It’s a general delusion that you should drink eight glasses of water a day. The quantity of water each person needs a day changes depending on body size, activity level, and climate. If you’re more active or live in a hotter environment, you may need a bit more than half your body weight.

o Caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea also count toward your total intake of water, but these should not make up the bulk of your fluid intake.

Balance your Lifestyle

o Quit Smoking. It’s impossible to be a truly healthy person if you smoke. Smoking is directly correlated with lung and mouth cancers, heart disease, stroke, and cancers of the throat, pancreas, and bladder.

o Safer Sex. Use protection while having sex and avoid sleeping with people you do not know. Engaging in risky sexual behaviors puts you at risk for unwanted pregnancies as well as STIs.

Be less Anxious and Think positively

Stress and anxiety can take a toll not only on your mental wellbeing but also on your physical health. Learn some strategies to control intrusive, anxious thoughts and to take your mind off of your troubles.
